The word Lingerie brings to mind the sense of luxury, beyond just ‘underwear.’ Lingerie is a much-loved ladies’ apparel, designed for special occasions or as everyday comfortable undergarments. Lingerie comes in all different shapes, sizes, and styles, from bras and panties to camisoles, shorts, sleepwear, and lightweight robes.

According to some research, around 75% of women and almost 30% of men have worn lingerie at least once in their lifetime. This points to the conclusion that people – especially women – definitely like these delicate undergarments (even if nobody can see them).

Lingerie is usually constructed of lightweight, breathable, smooth, and mildly elastic materials. Satin, silk, cotton, lace, chiffon, and charmeuse are also frequently used types of textile used for lingerie production because they offer that gentle, light, seductive feel.

Throughout history, many celebrities, like Marylin Monroe, Sofia Loren, and Brigitte Bardot, wore lingerie to enhance their natural beauty.

Modern celebrities have continued this trend, especially as they branch out into creating their own clothing lines. Now, it’s become almost impossible to see famous women with no lingerie linked to them. Today, celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Ashly Graham, Dita von Teese, and many others have embraced the sensuality of lingerie and decided to help women around the world feel more beautiful and confident in their bodies.

Short History of Lingerie

Lingerie comes from the French language and means “undergarments,” but it is usually used when referring to lightweight feminine undergarments more than male underwear.

Throughout history, women and men used to wear specially designed undergarments that almost always served a particular purpose. For example, men wore simple linen shirts to soak any sweat or to protect their skin from the sun or pests. On the other hand, women wore more complicated undergarments, such as linen shirts with corsets over them to highlight their waist and support their breasts. These were the traditional versions of modern shapewear that we wear today.

In the late nineteenth century, the first idea of undergarments that please the eye once you remove the rest of the clothing came to be. Lady Duff-Gordon of Lucile was the first woman to liberate ladies from the tight grip of a corset, allowing generations of women to breathe.

In the 1950s, the hourglass body was particularly appreciated, so many women strived for a fine figure line. That is why they wore corseted clothes and corseted undergarments. But the ’60s revolutionized how women wanted to look, with or without clothes, so brands started paying more attention to the undergarments that enhance natural beauty.

Since the female body was no longer a public scandal, more and more women began to show off their bodies. It influenced fashion, and massive production of more appealing undergarments started.

The 1980s brought back opulent undergarments, which enhanced the female body so much that they became a symbol of power. “Sex sells” propaganda came to life, and more brands started including appealing female bodies in their commercials. That is when the need for an appealing but revealing undergarment became so exaggerated that it resulted in entire collections of lingerie being presented to the public.

The Global Lingerie Market

Promoting the beauty of the natural female body is one of the main reasons why celebrities indulge in the lingerie industry.

In 2003, the worldwide lingerie industry worth was estimated to be $29 billion. Since then, it has grown even more, reaching over $70 billion. That is almost triple the value in less than 20 years. Famous people pairing up with lingerie brands was a story set for success because it helped many women find and embrace their inner beauty, but it also helped brands gain more popularity.

Predictions say North America will probably be the fastest-growing women’s lingerie market. Asia is the second in line. This makes sense since those two are drastically raising emphasis on women’s appearance. Luckily, this time it is in a positive direction that boosts confidence and overall content with body image.

How did celebrities get into it?

In the last decade, we have witnessed more and more celebrities get their hands into fashion, especially underwear. They offer a diverse assortment of intimate clothing that is helping women worldwide embrace their nature and authenticness and gain fresh confidence.

It all started when plus-size models became runway sensations. The world quickly embraced the trend because everyone knew how unrealistic body standards were up to that point.

Later, many celebrities who struggled with body image and industry demands became sick of the unrealistic standards and came out to the public, fully embracing their authentic natural look. It was a hit because many ordinary women realized that celebrities also feel down and bad about their bodies only because outdated values are imposed upon females and males.

Celebrities Who Have Their Lingerie Brands and Collections

The fashion business is not only profitable but also extraordinarily influential, so it was time for the most influential people to speak up about outdated, unrealistic body norms. Most of these celebrities started with clothing lines.

Still, after realizing that women worldwide are gaining more and more confidence seeing real people on runway shows and commercials, many switched to lingerie. Not only are they making beautiful undergarments, but they are catapulting feminine confidence to unforeseen heights.

Rihanna

Rihanna has created a large lingerie brand that caters to women and men of all sizes. Savage x Fenty isn’t just a brand collaborating with Rihanna; she is the head of the company. She takes real time and effort to choose the best and most flattering materials and designs, so fans can be sure that every piece has her mark of approval.

This is Rihanna’s first apparel brand, and in many interviews, when asked why she started it, she revealed that all she wants is for all women to feel secure and confident in their flesh. Clothes are there just to enhance the natural beauty. Savage x Fenty is an all-inclusive, body positivity-promoting brand.

Kim Kardashian

Next in line is the infamous Kim Kardashian with her shapewear and lingerie brand, “Skims.” Kim was called out for promoting unrealistic body standards for a long time with her presence in the public eye. She decided to make an all-inclusive brand of shapewear transform her image and to help women embrace their natural beauty while making them feel comfortable and free.

Kim has made her underwear and shapewear out of the most breathable materials that do not irritate the skin but also provide enough support for the body. Her collection is huge, and there are definitely a large range of styles to suit different body types – kudos to Kim for branching out and making her range accessible for all bodies.

Dita Von Teese

Dita Von Teese is famous for her stage lavishness and is recognized as the ultimate confidence icon for women. She exudes charisma and sex appeal.

Her lingerie collection is seductive and sensual, with a little bit of theatrical flair to make any woman feel like she’s a star on stage. She has a large range of different collections, all with a unique twist on the glamorous, timeless styles of classic full body lacey and bold lingerie sets.

Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham is another well-known figure in fashion that has launched her own lingerie line. She is an icon for plus-sized women around the world, being arguably the most famous plus-size model there is.

Her lingerie collection is a collaboration with knix, which features model block color sets and bodysuits, as well as mesh styles that are suitable for everyday wear with a hint of sheer sexiness.

David Beckham

Even men are getting into the lingerie game, encouraging other men to embrace their sexuality. David Beckham is the best example. He collaborated with H&M on the men’s lingerie collection, which attracted many males into the world of stylish undergarments.

What makes a men’s underwear go from just everyday briefs and boxers, to being labeled as lingerie? We’d say it’s the attention to detail in the style. His message shines through the collection, hoping his shoppers to understand that all men can feel sexy, no matter their shape or age.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum joined the list with her unique lingerie collection, “Heidi Klum Intimates.” Her line seeks to be inclusive to all women in every phase of life and body shape. Her collection features plus size styles, maternity clothing, super sexy designs, and even daily cotton underwear.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a famous runway model most notable for being a Victoria’s Secret Angel (another well-known lingerie brand), made the “Rosie Exclusively” collection with the M&S Lingerie brand.

She collaborated to create more than just sexy lingerie and everyday underwear, but also plenty of robes, gowns, and soft sleepwear.

Celebrities joining the lingerie race has been an exciting evolution in fashion. Why is it so special to own a piece by your favorite singer? Because you respect their art and look up to them as role models.

To then be able to wear a piece from their lingerie collection can infuse the confidence and star-studded feel that this celebrity embodies. Plus, celebrities are usually well-known for a reason – their artistic abilities or general social standing gives them access to the means to create fabulous, unique, and exciting collections for all women.

Many women have been struggling for a long time to find the right shapewear that looks and feels good. Throughout history, there was little choice for women, most of us were directed to either gymnastic spandexes or constricting corsets, but luckily that time is long gone. The future is now, and finding shapewear is easier than ever.

Shapewear has become an increasingly popular undergarment that feels comfortable and gives you a fantastic figure regardless of body type or size. Many use it as a self-esteem amplifier since it shapes the body in the right places, thus maintaining your natural body shape with slight figure enhancements.

But the rise of shapewear has its downfalls when we don’t fully understand what to use and when. The most important part of wearing shapewear is choosing the right shapewear for different bodies and outfits. Here’s a list of the different types of shapewear available on the market that every woman should know about.

What types of shapewear are there?

Since the whole idea about shapewear is that it fits the body and is invisible underneath the clothes, some might think that there’s not much to it. But since modern clothing varies so much, just as styles do, picking the right shapewear can sometimes be tricky.

Maybe you have a long-sleeved short dress that requires shaping your arms, but not thighs or you have a sleeveless shirt with a thigh skirt that needs some hip and waist slimming. Whichever the case, have no fear. There is a specific type of shapewear for every occasion and outfit.

Tummy tuckers, corsets, thigh shapers, butt shapers, tanks, bodysuits, compressing body suits, full body shapewear, and many other styles are available. When buying one, there are several things you should consider. The more you know about shapewear, the more you empower yourself to look and feel great. So, let’s get to it!

Bodyshapers

The term body shaper can refer to any type of garment that shapes your body. Still, when talking specifically about shapewear, bodyshaper is an undergarment that covers your breasts, stomach, waist, and hips but is short and does not cover your thighs and legs. It is used for slimming the abdomen and hips but offers excellent support for your breasts and does not require wearing a bra. It usually has straps, but they are available staples too.

Singlets

If you prefer wearing your bra under your shapewear, then singlets are an excellent choice since they cover the stomach, waist, hips, and thighs but do not cover your breasts. That is why they allow you to wear any type of breast support you like. They fit closely to the body and shape it the same way as body shapers. You can wear them under a dress or a bodysuit.

Dress slips

Dress slips are perfectly designed to fit under a dress. They can be shorter or longer, but usually not too long under the knee. They can have straps or be strapless, cover your breasts or reveal them so that you can wear a bra of your choice.

They slim the entire body, including the waist, hips, butt, and outer thighs, and also prevent irritation that some outfit materials can cause on the skin. They are perfect for long formal dresses but can be used under any type of dress you like.

Camisoles

Camisoles are one of the most used types of shapewear you can think of. Even if you do not want shapewear, their stretchy, light, breathable material offers excellent support for breasts, so many women choose them simply for that reason.

They also slim your stomach and protect the skin from unpleasant materials that irritate, such as wool or any type of synthetic material. They usually have adjustable straps, so you can control the tightness. They slim the waist, and longer ones can shape the hips, but many women wear them for their sheer comfortability.

Arm shapers

Arm shapers are not one of the most popular types of shapewear but are included in the list because more and more people are turning to them. They represent an undergarment that shapes the arms and leaves the rest of the body as is.

Sometimes, an arm shaper can include breast support but usually doesn’t. It can reach your hands or cover the upper parts of your arms, sliding down to just below the elbows. It is excellent for long-sleeved tight dresses.

Corsets

Corsets are one of the most famous (and traditional) types of shapewear. This is the shapewear that reaches way back in time, to eras where fashion norms obligated women to wear them. Since then, a lot has changed, and women are no longer forced to shape their waists in uncomfortable ways. But many choose to use modern corsets still because the old ideal of the female hourglass body remains deeply rooted in society, or they simply like how it makes their body look. Whatever the reason, corsets remain one of the most worn undergarments.

Even though they can provide solid support for the spine, which might benefit some people with back issues, corsets are generally one of the most dangerous shapewear.

They are not always made of light and breathable material, so they can irritate the skin. They can also be too tight, which might cause discomfort and sometimes even breathing issues.

Today, there are many different corset types, and choosing one depends mainly on the occasion, the outfit, body type, and body size. Since Underoutfit does not offer any corsets in our collections, there are some replacements that do the job but feel much more breathable, movable, and lighter on the body.

Half slips

Half slips shape the waist, hips, thighs, and butt. They have a lot of similarities with other shapewear, such as shorts, but since they are not designed explicitly for pants, they can take a form of a skirt. Their material is, like all shapewear, light and breathable, so it is easy to wear them in summer, under dresses or shorts.

Controlling hips and waist

Controlling hips and waist can be done in several ways, but it mostly takes the form of high-waisted underwear or shorts that helps your butt, waist, and hips look dazzling, no matter the outfit you wear. They are suitable for sportswear, casual or formal dressing, and are also made of light material, ideal for summer.

They are invisible under clothes and great for wearing under tight pants or jeans because they do not require you to wear underwear, so there won’t be any underwear lines that could ruin the outfit.

Controlling pants

Controlling pants shape your lower body, including hips, thighs, butt, and calves. They can vary in shapes and sizes, from very tight ones that shape your entire legs to flare ones that primarily shape your bottom, hips, and thighs.

Your choice depends on the outfit you are aiming at and the occasion. Breathable material makes them suitable even for training, so many people wear them to the gym, running, walking, or doing other physical exercises.

Controlling shorts

Controlling shorts are used for shaping the waist, hips, and bottom. They can vary in length but mostly reach the middle of the thigh, which is why they are not often used for shaping thighs. They are great for shorter summer dresses, when you want to be able to move freely, but can be worn under pants or tighter skirts and dresses. Because of the light material and almost skinlike feel, many use them as a form of sportswear.

Shapewear Is For Everyone

In conclusion, different types of shapewear will affect your body differently, so when choosing the right style, consider all circumstances of your outfit and overall look. Also, make sure you feel comfortable and breathable enough to spend some time wearing the shapewear. Try to choose light materials that will not make you sweat and will not irritate your skin, especially if you suffer from various skin conditions (dermatitis, eczema, etc.).

There are quite a few similarities between different types of shapewear, so sometimes, it might be hard to distinguish them. But at the end of the day, the name of the type is far less important than the role it plays in the lives of many women and men.

If any particular type helps you shape your body the way you want, it is no shame to use it, regardless of gender, age, or size. Shapewear is made for everyone, and its adaptability is the best proof.

Put how you feel in front of how you look. Remember that the most remarkable beauty comes from feeling good, and keep that in mind when choosing shapewear. If you choose one that is too tight, loose, short, or long, you will no longer feel comfortable, reflecting on your outfit and overall look. So, let your body breathe and keep it as natural as possible, only slightly enhancing your natural beauty with a little help of quality shapewear.

Society programmed us to believe that not all bodies are beautiful and that if your body weight is not meeting realistic standards, something must be wrong with you. Well, we are here to dismantle that belief!

All bodies are natural and beautiful, no matter their shape, size, structure, or anything else. And that is how we should honor them. But the beauty industry has, for a long time, dictated trends that put slim sizes far ahead of plus measures, which is why most brands focus on manufacturing small and medium sizes.

What they forget is that focusing only on one body type means that you are probably losing valuable customers and damaging the brand’s reputation. No one wants a brand that excludes anyone.

But even so, theory and reality are different, and there are still significant issues surrounding plus-size clothing – like accessibility. It would not be an issue if it weren’t creating substantial problems for some people and making their shopping experience a nightmare.

Issues of Plus-size Store Shopping

Shopping in stores should be a fun and exciting experience. Breezing through the stores, enjoy putting different outfits together, and treating yourself. After all, you deserve to look and feel wonderful.

But it starts to become disappointing when you realize that, once more, you are asking the salesperson if they have a slightly larger size, and they are looking at you like you have committed the greatest fashion crime in history. Then they apologize for not having larger sizes and advise you to look for what you need in the pregnancy aisle. Or they even suggest changing stores.

These kinds of experiences can be very upsetting, disappointing, and tiresome. No one wants to dig their clothes from the bottom of storage houses just because it is a few sizes larger than what they teach us we should look like.

Shopping for plus-size clothes in stores has several important issues. Scaling is probably one of the most significant issues women all over the world come across. Sizes and body shapes vary from culture to culture. Still, it is common for fashion brands to assume that everyone has a slim figure, so they either do not produce larger sizes or make untasteful plus-size collections no one likes.

Materials are also a big issue. Many companies produce low-quality, stretchy, plus-size clothes that are uncomfortable and bad for the skin. Bad design is also a significant problem. Most companies do not invest enough in designers specializing in designing plus-size clothing.

And finally, stigmatization is the most significant of all issues. It helps create a negative connotation, making people think there is something wrong with being plus-size. That creates insecurities and a lack of confidence. Sometimes it even results in mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

Issues of Plus-size Online Shopping

Online shopping is no better. Many online brands have embraced the idea of plus-size women being included in the norm, but some significant issues still occur. These issues are similar to those occurring in stores: materials are of low quality, so the clothes get ripped fast, larger sizes are either non-existent or often out of stock, and it is tough to determine and find the size that will fit you.

This is the case not only with outfits but with underwear, too. It becomes almost impossible to find the proper undergarments, especially when you can not physically try them on before you buy. For example, shapewear can be especially difficult to buy online, and it becomes almost impossible when you include a plus-size in the formula.

But one of the hardest things with online shopping is that it is tough to return the clothes. That means that, in many cases, what you get is what you have to stick by because only a few stores offer a return of goods.

Many women who shop for plus-size clothes online are devastated when they find out that not only have they spent money on the low-quality product, but it is also almost impossible to ship it back. In other words, they must buy a new product and just throw the old one away. You can always donate, of course, but it could repel many buyers from online shopping.

How to Shop For Plus-Size Clothing?

Since shopping for plus-size clothes can be difficult, we’re offering a few ideas that will make your shopping experience more pleasant and rewarding.

Our advice is mainly reserved for online shopping since there is a much larger market for plus-size clothing than in real life. But also, it should not be reserved only for online shopping. All of the ideas are also applicable in real-world shopping, so do not hesitate to use them if you wish to improve the shopping experience.

Get to Know Your Shape and Size

Knowing your exact shape and size is crucial, especially in online shopping. Many brands offer sizes and accurate measurements for sizes, so it is much easier to navigate through the clothing sections. That way, you will not have to assume or guess what a brand means by XXXL. Having precise scales and measurements for all sizes makes a shopping experience much more manageable and pleasant – so always look for the brand’s sizing chart.

To determine your clothes size, you should measure your breasts, waist and hips, and body length. Place the measuring tape over the most comprehensive portion of your breasts, the smallest part of your natural waist, just below your ribs and above the highest pelvis bones, and on the broadest part of your hips while keeping your legs together. The measurement you get will maybe not be 100% accurate but will be the closest ones to your actual size.

Make sure you are not squeezing the measuring tape too tightly or loosely. Also, measure your height, height of your legs, and length of your arms. If you wish to be more precise, measure your thighs by placing the measuring tape around one of your thighs while standing. Place the tape around the middle part of your thigh, and remember not to tighten it too much.

This way, you will get your exact measurements, which will help you determine the size of the clothes you are looking for.

Get to Know the Return Policy of the Brand

Always make sure you know how to return the clothes. Online brands have embraced the return policy lately, so always ensure you read it and understand it when you figure the clothes do not fit you. Never hesitate to return anything if you do not need it or it does not work for you the way you wanted.

Keep in mind that stores (online and in real life) have a return policy that requires you to return an item within a certain period. That can be 10, 15, 30, 50, 100, or 150 days. Some brands offer even more time for returning, and most also provide a full refund. But remember to read everything you can, so there are no misunderstandings.

Pick a Brand

This means that you should not only pick a brand that you like but also pick a brand that can offer you everything you are looking for. Read about the materials they use, their size range, the shipping, and the return policy. Try to speak to other customers or slide through online reviews. That is one of the most reliable ways to determine whether the brand offers quality goods. Underoutfit offers an exchange and return policy that allows women to have confidence that if they don’t find the right size the first time, they’re not wasting money.

Once you establish the brand trust, proceed with your shopping.

Find a Good Tailor

Even if you find the perfect brand that gets you what you want and need, some pieces of clothes may still not fit you the way you want them to. That is why you should make a tailor your best friend. If not a best friend, then at least a good one, because that way you will get the opportunity to keep the pieces of clothing that you like, but that do not fit you right.

This way, your clothes become customizable and will fit you even better because they will be adapted according to your body. It will help you feel more comfortable, confident, and happy. It will allow you to even stray from the woman’s section and get a wider variety of quality clothes.

With these things in mind, your shopping experience, whether online or in stores, will become a more pleasant experience and will get you much better clothes that fit your body complexion. You will also have more things to experiment with, allowing you to try out new things and look at yourself without resentment for spending a lot of money on the clothes you do not wear.

And finally, do not forget that all bodies are beautiful, and you should not shrink or starve yourself to fit into society’s false ideals. You are beautiful just the way you are, and no brand or size label can tell you any different!

Despite a great deal of confusion and even many negative preconceptions, shapewear has maintained its presence in the lingerie industry as a valued wardrobe inclusion for women. For many years, it was a common belief that shapewear is used only post-surgery or by women who are unhappy with their bodies.

With the progression of fashion trends and the strengthening of global consciousness, those myths have been debunked. Still, a lot of women are having their doubts and second thoughts.

What is it really used for? Is shapewear good for my posture or bad for it? They’re all common questions. Since there is so much to shapewear that is not discussed, we’re going to go into the most asked questions to help you better understand its uses and benefits.

What is shapewear used for?

A common misconception is that shapewear is only used to shape your body in desired places such as hips, thighs, stomach, and breast areas. But it goes far beyond that. Shapewear not only shapes your body but also helps your posture and prevents humpback.

Women with large breasts, who often have severe back pain, can significantly benefit from shapewear since it offers a backup and releases tension from the spine.

But regardless of your breast size, shapewear provides stable support for your back, abdominal muscles, and spine and helps strengthen them.

Is shapewear only for plus-size women?

The answer to this question is relatively straightforward – NO! Shapewear is suitable for all body types, sizes, and genders but is not always recommended for younger audiences. Girls under eighteen should consult with physicians because shapewear can sometimes distort the young body in development.

Not to mention the psychological effects of young girls with growing bodies using something that changes their shape when their bodies are already changing. When used mindfully, it can become a great self-esteem booster for everyone.

In the last decade, even men have used shapewear more frequently than before, mainly because the stereotypes about shaping your body as a man are being broken.

What types of shapewear are there?

There are several different types of shapewear that you can use, depending on the targeted area of your body you’re looking to streamline or support. If you wish to slim your tummy, accentuate your waist and give firm support to your breasts, then camisoles and singlets are an excellent choice. You can highlight your waist, even more, using open-bust bodysuits, too.

On the other hand, if you wish to shape your lower body – glutes, thighs, and legs – then using controlling leggings, shorts, or half slips is a great option. They are adaptable to your outfit length, so they are suitable for both long and short trousers or dresses.

If you do not have a specific targeted area, but wish to shape your entire body, then using full coverage body shapewear is a great option.

Whichever type you choose, depending on your goals, body type, or outfit, shapewear will blend perfectly and be unnoticeable when you choose the right clothing to pair with your undergarments.

Do you wear underwear under your shapewear?

Most shapewear does not require wearing underwear, but if you feel more comfortable with it, just go for it. Keep in mind that, since shapewear is tight, breathable, and light, if you do decide to wear underwear, it’s possible that fine undergarment lines will be visible. This might ruin the outfit’s aesthetics for some, while others won’t be bothered. It’s your personal choice, at the end of the day.

Underwear could also cut into your skin, depending on the shapewear tightness, and could sometimes make you feel restrained or uncomfortable. But in any case, this choice is totally up to you, your needs and desires, no matter the advice you might receive from others.

Can you wear shapewear every day?

Yes, you can wear shapewear every day. Since it is made from a light, stretchy, breathable material, it will allow your skin to breathe and will not make you sweat. The material is light enough to make you feel like you have nothing under your clothes.

Most experts suggest wearing shapewear moderately or only on special occasions – not all day every day. That means you do not need to wear it to the store or the dentist.

If you do choose to wear it every day, then experts advise not to wear it for more than 8 hours unless you have had some kind of surgical procedure that requires you to wear it all the time.

Can shapewear cause health issues?

Some people have suggested that wearing shapewear everyday might cause damage to your internal organs, but this is not research-supported information. Still, minor health risks come with wearing shapewear, most of which are related to the skin.

Since shapewear is tight and in direct contact with the surface of the skin, it can sometimes cause skin irritation, especially if you wear it for extended periods.

Suppose you have some kind of skin condition, eczema, or dermatitis; in such cases, shapewear could irritate sensitive skin. Be careful when shopping – choose the lightest, most natural materials that allow your skin to breathe and not cause as much irritation.

What must you keep in mind when shopping for shapewear?

Shopping for shapewear can be done in stores or online. Underoutfit is a leading shapewear brand that offers U.S-wide shipping, and even free returns and exchanges so that you find the right fit for you.

With the ability to order online and also try it on with free exchanges/returns for a different size or style, you can have confidence in finding the right fit for you. It’s vital that the sizing is correct,  as you could suffer discomfort if it is too tight or loose.

In both cases, it will not serve its purpose, and you will just waste your money on a product that will not help you achieve your body goals. That is why you should always adjust the shapewear to your body size and type. Wearing smaller shapewear will not shape your body better; it will just cause irritation and discomfort.

When buying shapewear online or in stores, do your research, explore the options, read reviews, and do not be afraid to ask the store additional questions if you have any.

How to pick the right size for your shapewear?

Firstly, make sure you know your right clothes sizes, whether medium, large, or extra large; it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you choose shapewear size following the size of the clothes you usually wear. That will be the best starting point.

From there, you can explore options by trying them on and seeing which sizes fit you better. Sometimes medium fits large much better than the actual large. That is why you always try the shapewear on.

To adjust the type of shapewear, ensure you know your body type since shapewear will not have the same effect on all bodies. For example, if your hips are naturally accentuated but not your waist, try to choose shapewear that will leave your hips as they are but will slim your waist to the size you are aiming for.

How to wash-and-care your shapewear?

Since most people do not wear underwear beneath the shapewear, which comes in direct contact with the skin, it is essential to change it and wash it regularly. You should not wear the same shapewear for more than two or three days.

That means you do not have to wash it every time after wearing it, but to reduce possible skin irritation or bacterial infections, try to wash it as frequently as possible, especially lower body garments.

The way you are supposed to wash it is labeled on the tag. Since it is made from delicate material, shapewear is usually cleaned by hand in cold or warm water. If you decide to wash it in the washing machine, use a soft fabric and cold water program to avoid any possible damage.

Does wearing shapewear help you lose weight?

It is widely believed that shapewear can help you reduce body fat, but no research supports this idea. What shapewear does is it shapes the body, and after taking it off, it takes time for the body to return to its previous state.

That is why the illusion of change in size and shape is created after taking the shapewear off. But after a few hours or days, the body will return to its previous state. So, the short answer is no, shapewear does not help you reduce your body weight, but it can help with temporary modifications.

In conclusion, getting to know as much as possible about the shapewear can save you time and energy. A healthy diet and regular exercise will help you reach your body goals with more permanent results. However, if you just feel comfortable in it or need to slim fast for an event, shapewear is always there for you. Do not be scared to try it out.
Even tho there is some prejudice about using shapewear, remember that there is nothing wrong with wearing it to feel more comfortable in your skin. Do whatever feels good to help you feel more confident. If you’re ready to find your perfect fit, explore Underoutfit’s wide range of best selling shapewear garments.

Shapewear is all about making you feel comfortable and confident, no matter what you’re wearing. With so much shapewear available on the market, you’d think that we know all there is to know about it, but actually, there are many myths that need to be cleared up.

We’re going to bust the common shapewear myths to empower you to make informed decisions when choosing your new shapewear pieces.

Myth # 1 Shapewear helps you lose weight

One of the biggest myths about shapewear is that it will help you lose weight. Shapewear is not a miracle tool that will instantly help you melt those extra pounds away just by wearing it. A body shaper does smooth out your body outline and makes you look slimmer, but it does not reduce weight.

Shapewear can make your waistline more visible and slim down your silhouette, but you will still weigh the same and maintain the same body shape when not wearing it. There can be indirect weight loss effects, however – by experiencing your body shape streamlined, you might feel extra motivation to create healthier habits so that this shape becomes yours no matter whether you’re wearing your shapewear or not.

Myth #2 Shapewear work best if you get one size smaller

Shapewear is made to make women feel more confident and comfortable. They are not made to restrict your comfort with suffocation. Shapewear is designed for specific body sizes, so trying out a smaller size and squeezing your body into something that doesn’t feel good is undoubtedly not going to make you feel more confident.

Choosing the right size is key even for high-quality shapewear to work perfectly. Think of it like shoes; your foot only fits comfortably when you really focus on the correct size. Since you’re wearing shapewear generally for longer periods of time (whether all-day or for events), you don’t want to feel restricted the whole time – just like you wouldn’t feel awesome walking around in tight-fitting shoes.

Additionally, shapewear smaller than your body size will cause bulging effects that can actually have the opposite effect that shapewear has been intended to create.

Plus, it may cause issues in moving, swallowing, blood circulation, and even breathing. Shapewear is designed to tone up and smoothen your body to fetch that beautiful silhouette outline. So, always check the sizing chart before buying shapewear.

Myth # 3 Wash your shapewear with your regular clothes

Washing your shapewear often with your leggings and panties can make your shapewear become loose and saggy. The regular cycle of your washing machine can desolate your shapewear.

You can wash it in your washing machine but with a delicate cycle and gentle detergent so that your shapewear may not lose its power. Also, washing your shapewear in this way will increase its lifespan.

Myth # 4 Choose shapewear that matches the color of your clothes

Always choose shapewear that matches your skin tone – not your clothes. Buying tons of shapewear in different colors will make it more visible rather than making it undetectable. To make your body shaper untraceable, always choose the correct size and the color which tones your skin.

Myth # 5 Shapewear is for Plus size only

Shapewear is not at all about body size. Even many celebrities with bodies not considered plus-size have admitted to wearing shapewear. Body insecurities are part of most of our lives regardless of how empowered and confident we are. Shapewear is not at all about BMI, but it’s about positive body image. Shapewear only enhances your figure and body outline, making you feel more confident in your favorite dresses.

Myth # 6 Shapewear causes serious health problems

We live neither in the medieval era nor the woman corsets made of any stiff fabric anymore. If your body shaper makes you uncomfortable, just try a different size, or switch to a better brand. The up-to-date shapewear is made from delicate, breathable, and stretchable fabric.

Shapewear is fashioned to even out your excess fat by distributing and leveling it into the desired areas. You can wear low-level compression shapewear for up to 12 hours.

For medium-level compression, you can wear it for up to 8 hours. And the high-level compression shapewear for up to 6 hours a day. Once you have chosen the right size and fabric, shapewear can make you look smart and confident.

Myth # 7 Wearing two shapewear pieces will make you look better

That is so not true! Wearing two shapewear pieces at a time does not make you look better. Instead, it could be even more uncomfortable, restrict your movement, and could also block your blood flow. Shapewear is designed to make you look smooth and flawless. However, overlapping two shapewear can make you look a little bit bulky.

Myth # 8 Shapewear is uncomfortable

Shapewear’s fabric has innovated drastically from that Victorian era shapewear. So, your undergarments are now stretchable, breathable, and comfortable to wear. Now, you can wear high-quality shapewear in your daily routine and look smart without hurting your skin. The fabric quality and garment’s designs and paneling are now more focused on supporting the specific parts of your body. So no more discomfort with compression!

Myth # 9 Shapewear will replace your diet and exercise

No shapewear can replace diet and exercise. Without a doubt, shapewear can instantly show your body curves, but this is only for a while. A balanced diet and regular exercise are significant for your health and mental well-being no matter what.

You can never avoid the benefits of real nutrition-filled food by wearing a body shaper. Shapewear is a valuable wardrobe undergarment to make your outfit look stunning on you, but it is not a permanent solution for changing your weight.

Myth # 10 Shapewear is only for special occasions

Another cliche statement we hear about shapewear is that they are only for use on special occasions. Indeed, we want to look good at the special event, but that does not mean you cannot wear body shapers on your work days or everyday outings.

Shapewear is specifically created to make you look smart and confident, so is it only the special events days we want to look confident? With the growing fashion industry, there are many options in shapewear. From low-level compression to high compression and they are breathable too. So you can 100% use it any time you want.

Summing Up

Every other human will have a different opinion on the same thing, be that a person, a fancy dress, a house, or anything. Undoubtedly, many people would have tried shapewear and did not feel good in it, so they assumed that shapewear was not good.

Mainly, women who chose the wrong size suffer the most with their body shapers. So, try it for yourself before making an opinion. Maybe that shapewear is missing from giving you the full feel of your daily look.

In the end, it is definitely all about you. What makes you feel comfortable. If you feel like trying out shapewear will help you experiment with your fashion life and is something you are interested in, go ahead and try them out. And, if you feel like; you are comfortable in your looks and feel more confident in your existing look, that’s great too!

You are uniquely you. There is no one else out there that is exactly like you, and that’s why, when it comes to bras, what is trending may not be your style, shape, or right for your body. But what works best for you never goes out of style. So stay true to yourself, and let us help you find the perfect bra for your body and lifestyle.

Measure First, Shop Second

Before you even start looking, have an idea what size bra you wear. If you’re shopping at an online store, you can filter the search results to only include bras in your size which will save you time in the long run. It’s pretty disheartening to be shopping for bras only to find that it’s not available in your size.

Here is how you can measure yourself to find your ideal bra size:

  • You’ll need a tape measure, piece of paper, and a writing utensil (unless you’re good at doing quick math in your head, then you just need the tape measure)
  • Wear a lightly lined bra to lift everything into place.
  • Measure your bust. Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your bust. Write this number down.
  • Measure your band. Wrap the measuring tape around your rib cage just below your breasts where your bra naturally sits. This number will be your numerical size. Write this number down too.
  • Now, subtract your band from your bust. This number will be your cup size. Each inch of difference equals a cup. If your band and bust have a one inch difference you’re an A-cup. Two-inch difference equals B-cup and so on. (For example: your band measures 36-inches and your bust is 38-inches. 38-36=2. Your size is 36B).

You might be wondering, “what if I land on an odd number for my band?” Most bras come with a 1-inch adjustable eyelet clasp. Keep in mind that new bras should fit snugly on the tightest clasp because after wearing and washing them a few times they will loosen up. If you land on an odd number, we suggest you round down.

What about half sizes? We’re glad you brought that up. If your bust lands on a half-inch mark then you will want to look for brands that offer half-sizes. (For example: the band is 35-inches and the bust is 37.5-inches. 37.5-35=2.5. Your size is 34B ½).

Most brick and mortar lingerie boutiques will offer free in-store fittings so you don’t have to do this yourself but it’s nice to have an idea of what you’re looking for before you walk inside.

Give The Girls A Boost With a Push-Up

Some ladies like to boost their physique with a little extra push. Push-up that is. Whether your breasts are on the smaller side, you have a little bit extra on top, or you’re somewhere in-between, a push-up bra can lift your spirits and your breasts.

Those of us that aren’t as perky as we once were benefit from the extra padding at the bottoms of the cups. It can be difficult to find the right amount of padding for a push-up. Women with smaller breasts may like the look of double padding to increase their cleavage, while women with larger breasts may only want a standard push-up bra to avoid slippage or discomfort.

Emphasizing your upper body with a push-up bra helps create balance for women who have curvy hips. Adding curves and symmetry isn’t a necessity, but if that is the look you are going for, a push-up bra. Pair it with a corset, waist trainer, or high waisted panty to really smooth out your figure.

Padding When You Want It

A classic demi-cup bra is lightly padded and lined for that everyday wear. These styles are commonly called T-shirt bras because they look great even under a T-shirt. This is a classic daily bra you can wear under tops and dresses that range from the club or dinner and drinks to the conference room or client meetings.

Some of us who work in blue collar positions will find this bra will move with you while keeping everything in place if your job requires twisting, turning, lifting, or bending. Buy soft and moisture wicking fabrics to avoid chafing (trust us, we’ve been there).

Even if you wear a uniform, or you have the freedom to dress for business, you don’t have to sacrifice style. Demi-bras come in a wide variety of colors and accents to express yourself – even if no one else is going to see it.

A Little Breather With A Bralette

Do you need a break from being bundled up all the time, but you aren’t totally comfortable free-boobing it? Bralettes offer that free-wheeling feeling while still maintaining a sense of modesty. These bras are the least supportive and are generally made of soft or lacey material. If you are looking to add a bit of whimsy or fantasy to your wardrobe, bralettes are perfect for you.

Look, just because they’re not very supportive doesn’t mean that babes with bigger breasts can’t enjoy the look and feel as well. Bralettes are for all sizes and look super trendy under overalls, high-waisted pants, or under an open button down shirt.

It’s called loungewear for a reason. There’s something very freeing about laying in front of the TV with the remote and popcorn in your lingerie – unconstricted, relaxed, and unfettered.

Serve, Spike, Score (The Sport Section)

Don’t worry, the world has changed since the basic cotton sports bra. Athletic women, or women looking to start working out need a supportive, moisture wicking sports bra. It doesn’t matter what your bust size measures; the point is, if you don’t workout with support you’ll give yourself a sore chest (and maybe a black eye). None of us feel super comfortable with our girls flopping about as we try to lift heavy or run (as a runner, this is the worst).

Today, we’ve realized that sportswear is fashionwear and many women have opted for sports bras over the traditional style bras on occasion.

Sports bras come in various levels of support depending on the desired activity you choose to participate in. For example, high impact sports like running require more support of the breasts. While sports and activities that are lower impact, such as yoga still require some support, but aren’t required to be as structured.

High impact sports that require running, jumping, or quick movement need to keep you secure because bouncing is just for ‘90s raunchy comedies. Look for something with adjustable straps and an eyelet clasp similar to a traditional bra. They feature more compression and stability to stay in place with rapid, intense movements. These sports bras are often marketed as “high impact” or geared toward specific sports.

Low impact sports bras have lighter compression and often have thinner straps and removable cups. These bras allow for free movement and stretching without fear of “falling out”. Removable pads allow you to adjust your comfort level and provide more room. Pro tip: if you have the time and patience you can sew two cup inserts together to increase the padding in your bra for added comfort and a more rounded look.

Sports bras aren’t just for exercise anymore. To be honest, compression tops (including sports bras) that have cute patterns look awesome with high-waisted jeans for a low-key, out around town spring or summer style. Now matching popular styles of trendy workout clothing, retailers are releasing matching sets – sport bra and shorts combo – and different necklines and cutouts to stand out in the gym or at the grocery store.

Straps or Strapless

Has anyone ever had success with a strapless bra? It seems like everything starts out looking good but by the end of the night you’re tugging and pulling on the band to keep it from falling around your waist. Either that or you end up with painful indents in your skin from the tightness of the band.

But we’ve got a few helpful tips to make a strapless bra work under any outfit.

  • The first step is to measure yourself correctly (refer to the top of this article). Thinking you need to size down so the bra doesn’t slip is a recipe for pain. But your ideal size and pair it with a corset or waist-trainer to help keep it in place.
  • Look for bands that have silicone lines on the inside which help reduce slippage.
  • If you’re still not satisfied with the way your bra sits, investing in anti-slip silicone tape is an extra safety measure will keep the band securely under your bust.

Plunging Necklines

There’s nothing wrong with a little peek-a-boo with your bra, but if you’re wearing something that might show your undergarments, we suggest a camisole or bralette that adds detail and color to your outfit. For dresses and tops with plunging necklines that you don’t intend to play peek-a-boo with, a plunge bra is your best friend.

In a way, the plunge bra resembles a triangle bikini. Instead of meeting in the middle of your bust, they descend all the way down to the band. Women of all bust sizes enjoy this bra but it is mostly popular with women who are smaller chested or have wide-set breasts. Women with breasts that are closer together may find that a plunging neckline bra does not offer the support of some other options.

The Comfort Shaping Bra (Black)

The Balconette

A favorite for many women who wear necklines that show off the collar bones is the beautiful balconette bra. Named for its resemblance to a balcony or platform, the neckline provides a more rounded look and straps that are wider-set than traditional cup bras. These bras can be designed with or without a band that covers part of the torso, much like a cropped camisole or body shaper.

Women may find the support of a balconette bra to be more comfortable since the straps attach at the side of the cups rather than the center, relieving some of the weight from your shoulders. Others may find it less comfortable because it sits close to the underarm and can cause irritation if you’re not used to the style or the material is not soft enough. Overall, it’s a great addition to your lingerie drawer as it comes in various styles and materials to offer a new look to your wardrobe.

Final Thoughts

If you read nothing else in our article, the one thing you need to remember is to get fitted and buy according to your measurements. The reason we have so many beautiful styles of bras is because there are so many beautiful and unique women in this world. Everyone deserves to feel confident and comfortable in their clothes.

We love lingerie. It’s sexy, soft, and empowering. But lingerie can be intimidating to some women who have made it a point to avoid that section of the store and only bought the necessities. So, if you are curious about trying lingerie for the first time, or maybe you have tried lingerie in the past and decided you have bad luck with finding the right pieces, we’ve got you covered. Today we’re talking about the do’s and don’ts  of wearing and buying lingerie to help you get the most out of your pieces while feeling comfortable and desirable.

The Fit

This is a common first step, but it’s one many women overlook. As consumers we’re so obsessed with the number or label on a tag than we are with how clothing actually looks and feels on our body. The size only matters when we’re talking about getting you the garment that will look its best on you.

Do find out your measurements. You can do this at home with a tape measure or go to a lingerie boutique and ask the sales associate if they do measurements. Most lingerie stores will fit you for free, but if you want to go in ready to make a purchase, here’s how you can measure yourself:

  • Bras: Measure the widest part of your bust. That number will help you determine your cup size. Next, measure your band – this is the area just under your bust around your ribcage where the bra will clasp. Subtract your band from your bust. The number you come up with is assigned a letter of the alphabet. 1” = A, 2” = B, 3” = C and so on.   (Example: If your band is 34” and your bust measures 37”, your size is 34C.)
  • Panties and Underwear: Measure the widest part of your hips and butt.
  • Any clothing that goes around your waist: You’ll need to measure the top waist (where you are most narrow, and the bottom waist (just above your hips).

Thankfully, because bras are based on specific measurements, they are generally more accurately sized. Unfortunately, with any other types of women’s clothes, we find that sizing is ambiguous and completely up to the designer. Online retailers are pretty good about utilizing a sizing chart; consult that first to help you make your best purchase.

Additionally, with bras, more designers are offering half-sizes because they’ve finally realized some women are too busy for the B-cup, but the C-cup leaves gaps and we don’t love gaps.

Don’t choose the size you “want” to be. Honor your body with clothes and lingerie that fit you now. You’ll be amazed that a size larger feels better and looks better. No one is going to ask you what the label says. And if they do, politely tell them to [explicit] right off.

The Style

If you’ve never walked the lingerie aisles before and only caught what is on the VS fashion show, you might feel intimidated by what you see. Don’t worry, it happened to a lot of us. The good news is that unless you’re strutting the runway with giant wings on your back, no one is going to tell you what to wear.

Do choose a style, color, and fabric that appeals to your taste. Ease into lingerie and enjoy adding a little lace or silk to your underwear drawer. There’s no rules with lingerie, meaning you don’t have to jump right into teddies and strappy garters if you aren’t ready for that yet. Be a little adventurous with color and texture first while still enjoying the coverage of a bra, camisole, or bodysuit.

Do buy lingerie for a specific event in mind (wedding, date night, ect.) and try to incorporate it into your everyday wear (if you want to) so you get more than one use out of the garment.

Don’t buy anything that you’re not going to wear. It looks pretty on the hanger but if you’re not interested in wearing it, it’s just money down the drain and taking up space in your drawer or closet.

The Color

Depending on what you’re wearing over your lingerie (or if you decide to make lingerie a part of your outerwear) color is very important. If you’re feeling feisty, buy bright and bold. If you’re feeling simply sexy, nude colors, blacks, and whites are great for daily wear.

Do, when wearing white, choose a nude color closest to your skin tone. Many women think if you’re wearing white then you should camouflage your underwear by matching the shade of the outerwear.

Do think about skin tone and shades. Are you autumn, winter, spring or summer? Some women have warmer tones to their skin while others are naturally cooler toned. What does all this mean? It basically means that some colors are better suited for you. Warmer tones like burnt orange, burgundy, and dark greens look great on a woman with autumnal features. Pastels look great in summer features, and primary colors are suited for spring. Winters are all about dark shades of every color.

Don’t stress too much about what colors go with what outfits. Aside from wearing white, there aren’t very many rules of color. Just wear what you like and what feels and looks good to you.

How to Wear Lingerie

You may be thinking, just put it on? That’s the easy, literal answer, but there’s more to the question “How do I wear lingerie?”

Do experiment with different styles, cuts, and colors under your wardrobe. A bralette that pokes out of a v-neck top or a slip that adds some strappiness to the back of a dress or top can be the clever accent you need to take the outfit up a notch.

Don’t overlook the support of shapewear lingerie. Not everything has to be frilly. Some lingerie is designed to give you the shape you want based on your body type. The idea is to enhance the natural shape of your body and accentuate your best features.

Do wear lingerie as part of your whole outfit. Lace camisoles over solid colors, bralettes under belted jackets, and silk shorties with a pair of nude bike shorts (just for a little extra coverage) can all be styled to look like a great outfit for parties, dinner with friends, or just because.

Don’t forget the accessories! Dress up your look with makeup, jewelry, and belts. Make it a game. How glamorous can you get? Once you look so overdone and you feel ridiculous (just hang in there with us for one more minute) start taking pieces off one at a time until you reach a level that is just right for you. We don’t all have to be like Dolly Parton – as amazing and beautiful as she is. You’ll know it when the right level of style and glamor meet comfort for your own taste.

Do remember to wash your new lingerie before wearing it. Trust us, even if every single person that handled that piece of fabric did wash their hands, you don’t know what it has gone through during manufacturing, shipping, and retail. Save yourself from the nasty germs that pop up from time to time and read the next section on how to care for your delicates.

How To Care For Lingerie

Do buy a lingerie bag for your delicates. Trust us, with undergarments you have to follow the washing instructions in order to keep them soft and intact. Lingerie bags keep your underwear from unraveling after being tossed around with the rest of your clothes that may have zippers, straps, or buttons that could damage the fabric.

Don’t ever throw your lingerie in the washing machine with the rest of your clothes without a protective laundry bag. Don’t use bleach or harsh chemicals that could destroy the fabric (and the rest of your clothes).

Do, whenever possible, soak your lingerie in a mixture of water, fabric softener, and gentle detergent. Hand wash and lay flat to dry. You can toss your lingerie in the dryer on a cool setting to fluff it back up after it dries. Always pay attention to the laundry instructions to improve the longevity of your clothes.

Above all Else
Do be confident in what you wear. What you put on your body is an expression of yourself and what you want to show to the world. Wear your lingerie with confidence because you are one boss lady.
